 Club history

The club was originally founded on 5 October 1961 and sought affiliation to the then Whitehaven College so as to have use of the college hall once a week. In 1963 the club applied and were accepted as affiliated members of the RSCDS.

The club was very active in the first 12 years but unfortunately by 1976 numbers had declined and so reluctantly the group folded.

We restarted the dancing initially as an evening class in September 1981 and then in September 1982 formed a club, our instructor was a Mr Stewart who unfortunately left the area in 1983 but we were lucky to acquire the services of Mr Bill Cobb as teacher. Beckermet club closed and their remaining members joined with ours. We again applied successfully for affiliation to RSCDS.

In 1985 we opened without a teacher until we managed to acquire the services of Mrs Ann Cornwall, we were by then in the school hall in Whitehaven using a small room which was not quite big enough for growing numbers. We moved to the West Cumbria College in Sept 1987. In 1991/92 we made a decision to end our membership with the RSCDS.

In 1993 we had to look else where for accommodation as the College could no longer facilitate us, we were able to acquire  use of the hall in Moor Row Working Men’s Club were we continue to enjoy our dancing each Monday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Contact no 01946 820584.
